The national programme for organic production (NPOP) provides standards for organic production, systems, criteria and procedure for accreditation of certification bodies, the national (india organic) logo and the regulations governing its use. The standards and procedures have been formulated in harmony with other international standards regulating import and export of organic products. The national programme for organic production (NPOP) also provides an institutional mechanism for the implementation of national standards for organic production (NPOP).

Objectives of NPOP

  • 1 To provide the means of evaluation of certification programmes for organic agriculture and products (including wild harvest, aquaculture, livestock products) as per the approved criteria.
  • 2 To accredit certification programmes of certification bodies seeking accreditation under NPOP.
  • 3 To facilitate certification of organic products in conformity with the NSOP.
  • 4 To facilitate certification of organic products in conformity with the importing countries organic standards as per equivalence agreement between the two countries or as per importing country requirements.
  • 5 To encourage the development of organic farming and organic processing.

Scope the NPOP shall, inter alia, include the following:

  • 1 Policies for development and certification of organic products as notified by the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India from time to time.
  • 2 National standards for organic products and processes.
  • 3 Accreditation of certification programmes to be operated by certification bodies.
  • 4 Certification of organic products.
